A pilot study of brain injury in police officers: A source of mental health problems?

 

Police officers have a high risk of injury, with many officers developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a consequence. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common injury and has been extensively linked to mental health difficulties. Current research has not explored the impact of TBI in police populations, or the  risk of physical and emotional trauma specific to policing.

Violent crime had been rising across England and Wales resulting in the government’s Serious Violence Strategy 2018. This was set against a background of austerity, but just as re-investment was underway, the Covid-19 pandemic struck. As a result, crime patterns changed dramatically, as did policing practices. In this chapter, we analyse the impact of the pandemic on crime figures and discus the development of changing policing practices.
